With Roger O'Donnell gone from the band there were no live keyboards for the first time in my experience with the Cure live. This was my 10th show and it's hard to compare them all. The setlist this time was stellar, probably one of the best I've had the pleasure of being in attendance for. However, the use of rhythm guitar to fill in for what would normally be keyboard sequences was a bit weird, not bad necessarily, but strange.

Somehow the music seemed more empty, though the guitar work from Robert and Porl was as great as ever. Both of them must have changed guitars at least 20+ times throughout the show, and Simon was brilliant on bass as usual. Jason's drums have improved each year since joining the Cure, and his quasi-solo during Jumping Somone Else's Train was one of the high points of the night for me.

The encores were most probably the best I've experienced from the Cure. Disintigration being my all-time favorite Cure track; and the 15 minute version of A Forest that was presented was mind-blowing. Also, I do believe last night was the first time I had ever heard Grinding Halt performed live, which was a pleasant surprise.

I hope that Smith and Co. keep this up as long as they are humanly able. I can't imagine playing 3 hour sets everynight for over 30 years, but somehow they've managed to do it, and they make the price of admission to see them seem like a pittance. I have never regretted a single cent spent on Cure tickets, albums, merch, etc. and I never will.

The Cure, still the best live experience you will ever receive for your dollar!

I really enjoyed reading your review Marq. The Cure has been my favorite artist for most of my life, so any chance I can get to soak up a show I couldn't make it to is always appreciated. Prayersforrain.com used to be an excellent resource of info and show reviews for the band, if it's still around I'd have to suggest submitting this review.

Unfortunately I missed when the Cure stopped here on the East Coast in May. I hadn't missed a show since June of 2000 when the band toured for Bloodflowers in Camden, New Jersey. That show in particular was incredible because the venue was a semi-open air stadium with a view of the Delaware River to the rear, overlooking the Philadelphia skyline. The band opened with Want, and as soon as Robert sang "I want the sky to fall in/I want lightning and Thunder.." lightning actually crashed right over the Delaware and rain blew into the stadium.

Pretty awesome stuff.

Since then I've attended roughly four or five other Cure shows from DC to Camden and they have been some of the best nights of my life. Since hearing Perry and Roger left I was pretty let down, but the fact that Porl is back in the band is definitely great news. His guitar work on Wish, particularly with Doing the Unstuck, is fucking incredible live. Suffice to say missing out in this years performance really sucks, but being a new, and very paranoid, parent took priority this time.

Seems like you got the best encore of all time at your show as well, Plainsong and Disintegration (My favorite track also) back to back is almost too much to ask for.
